We are in-network with the following insurance plans:
Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Cigna, Optum, Oscar, Oxford, United Healthcare
NOTE: Some insurance plans only permit licensed therapists to provide care for their members
For clients with PPO insurance plans, upon request, we may provide clients with a receipt of services (also known as a “superbill”) to submit to their insurance provider for potential reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits.
For insurances we don't work with directly, we often use Mentaya, a platform that helps clients get money back on out-of-network therapy sessions. If you have out-of-network benefits, Mentaya will file claims and handle the insurance paperwork to make sure you get reimbursed. They charge a 5% fee per claim and have helped people get thousands of dollars back per year. You can sign up using this link: Mentaya App
Note: Mentaya's goal is to save you time and money. It's completely optional, and as your therapist I do not benefit in any way from your participation.

Why Weighing Private Pay Versus Insurance Matters in Therapy:
Given the rising cost of everyday necessities and the price we pay just to live in California, we get it! Despite the challenge of setting aside time and resources for one's mental health, we do believe that therapy is for everyone. We strive to establish personalized care strategies that fit most budget ranges. So, when choosing a mental health provider, don't allow cost to be a limiting factor. Let's break down five significant reasons to consider your options:
Enhanced Privacy and Confidentiality
When it comes to personal issues, ensuring privacy is crucial. Out-of-pocket therapy guarantees that your sessions remain confidential, without third-party interference such as insurance companies, medical practitioners, or potentially even employers. Unlike insurance providers, private pay allows you to control how your sensitive information is shared, creating a secure space for open exploration. Confidentiality is key to establishing trust in a therapeutic relationship, something we at Paper Cranes Counseling value highly.
Client-Centric and Adaptable Approach
Insurance often dictates the frequency of sessions and the type of support you can receive. On the other hand, private pay therapy offers adaptability tailored to your specific needs, providing flexibility irrespective of traditional norms. At Paper Cranes Counseling, we customize your therapy experience by considering all your available resources to enable progress at your pace, on your terms.
Elimination of Unnecessary Diagnostic Labels
Insurance companies frequently require a diagnosis for claim approval and processing. At Paper Cranes Counseling, we believe that not all life's challenges warrant a diagnostic label. Using private pay removes this necessity, facilitating support without the constraint of a diagnostic label.
Viable Cost Reduction Options
Opting for private pay doesn't necessarily mean higher costs and we, at Paper Cranes Counseling, value therapy accessibility. We have a range of therapist rates to accommodate different budgets, we accept HSA and FSA cards, and encourage applying for therapy vouchers you may qualify for. We also offer groups at a discounted rate and provide free online resources!
Prioritizing Your Well-Being
Private pay therapy is a testament to prioritizing your well-being. There is a financial commitment but the benefits of a custom, confidential, and flexible therapy experience are priceless. At Paper Cranes Counseling, our focus is on helping you achieve sustainable, profound self-discovery and transformation of the quality of your life.
When choosing between private pay and insurance, it's about more than just money. It's about investing in yourself and securing the support that fits your needs. Your mental well-being is worth the investment!
At Paper Cranes Counseling, you're not alone - we're here to help. Schedule a Connection Call today and embark on your journey towards healing.

Therapy may be covered, in part, by your PPO health insurance for out-of-network providers. What that means is that you would pay for therapy at the time of your session and later seek potential reimbursement from your insurance provider. If you have a covered diagnosis, we can provide you with a “superbill” statement for submission to your insurance provider. Be sure to look at your benefits if you will be seeking reimbursement, although reimbursement is not guaranteed and you may not receive the full amount.
You may check your coverage for out of network provider services by asking your insurance provider the following questions:
Do I have mental health insurance benefits for an out-of-network provider?
What is my deductible and has it been met?
How many therapy sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
What is the amount of reimbursement per therapy session?
For insurances we don't accept directly, we work with Mentaya, a platform that helps clients get money back on out-of-network therapy sessions.
It's completely optional, and as your therapist we do not benefit in any way from your participation.

“I’ve never been to therapy; where do I begin?”
Yes, let’s start at the beginning! Your first contact with Paper Cranes Counseling may be the phone consultation which is designed for you to have an open dialogue with your potential therapist. This consultation includes, but is not limited to, discussing why you are seeking therapy, what you are looking for in a therapist, and how we may be able to help.
Your initial appointment is considered a diagnostic or evaluation interview. During this initial appointment, further information will be gathered and you will work collaboratively with your therapist to discuss style of therapy, treatment goals, therapeutic interventions, role expectations, and frequency of sessions. Information shared in this appointment will help guide subsequent sessions.
Sessions are by appointment only. You may secure a session through our Client Portal.
*Once you schedule an appointment, be on the look out for a welcome e-mail from our Client Portal that contains a link to important documents in preparation for our first session.
“How long does therapy take”
The length of time you invest in therapy depends on the distress level, severity, and frequency of your symptoms, as well as how you and your therapist determine progress is made with your specified treatment goals. There are no guarantees in therapy (we wish!) but your level of motivation, consistency, commitment to the process, and utilization of your support system(s) are important to the efficacy of treatment. You will work collaboratively with your therapist to monitor progress as evidenced by self-report, scales, and feedback. Your therapeutic process may include periods of stagnation and regression which is common in the middle phase of treatment because, well, change is often uncomfortable. We feel that this is where the most skill-building, and implementation of skills, is necessary for forward movement.
“How is my privacy protected?”
Paper Cranes Counseling utilizes an electronic health record (EHR) and phone system that are fully HIPAA* compliant to protect your privacy. All information regarding the specific nature of your session is maintained and considered confidential within the office unless specified by you in writing. We follow HIPAA and maintain confidentiality. If in our clinical judgment we determine that there is serious, foreseeable, and imminent harm to self or identifiable others, we are not bound to keep that information confidential and we may need to disclose necessary information to appropriate entities. Other exceptions to confidentiality include suspected child abuse/neglect or in rare instances of a court-issued subpoena.
